Staircases

String / Stringer

A stair string, or stringer, is the inclined structural member running beside or beneath a flight to support its treads and risers.

A closed string conceals the ends of the steps within routed housings, while a cut or open string follows the stepped profile and may leave tread ends visible. Stair construction determines how loads and joints are carried.

In older Edinburgh properties, movement, decay or poorly executed alterations to a string can affect the whole flight. Investigation should distinguish cosmetic cracking from deterioration or looseness in the supporting member.

Because the string is structural, cutting it for services or changing the stair opening requires care. Repairs should maintain reliable support for the treads, risers and connected landings.
