Temporary Works

Temporary works are structures or measures installed for the construction process and removed, or no longer needed, once the permanent work can safely support itself.

Temporary works can include propping, bracing, shoring, access platforms and support for excavations. They allow a permanent alteration to be built while the existing structure is kept stable.

For a wall removal in an Edinburgh tenement, a temporary works plan may set out what carries the floors above, the order of demolition and beam installation, and when the supports can be taken away.

The temporary stage needs its own design and site checks where the risks warrant them. A permanent steel beam does not make the building safe during the period before that beam is installed and fully supported.
