Staircases

Tread

A tread is the horizontal part of a stair step on which a person places their foot.

The usable depth of the tread and its relationship to the riser determine much of a staircase's comfort and rhythm. The front edge may project beyond the riser to form a nosing.

Timber treads can become worn, split or noisy at their joints with the strings and risers. Repair may involve securing concealed connections, reinforcing damaged timber or replacing only the affected component.

When altering an existing Edinburgh staircase, tread dimensions should be assessed across the whole flight. An isolated change can create an unexpected variation that is uncomfortable or unsafe underfoot.
