Utility Room

A utility room is a practical service space used for laundry, cleaning equipment, storage and household appliances that do not need to occupy the main kitchen.

A utility room may include a washing machine, tumble dryer, sink, tall cupboards and space for coats or cleaning supplies. Good ventilation and sensible service access are more important than making it resemble a miniature kitchen.

In an Edinburgh renovation or extension, the room can reduce clutter and appliance noise in the main living space. Its position should work with plumbing, external access and the everyday route through the house.

Even a compact utility area benefits from planning around appliance doors, drying, worktop space and leak risk. If it shares space with an entrance, it may also function as a boot room.
