Ventilation

Ventilation is the controlled supply of fresh air and removal of stale, humid or polluted air from a building.

It may be natural, using windows and vents, or mechanical, using fans and ductwork. A complete strategy considers everyday background air, rapid removal of moisture and air movement through the home.

Ventilation becomes especially important when draughts are reduced through new windows, insulation or airtightness work. Improving heat retention without replacing the lost air movement can increase condensation and indoor-air problems.

Traditional Edinburgh properties often have complex air paths through chimneys, suspended floors and older windows. These should be understood rather than assumed to provide reliable or sufficient ventilation.
