Architect

An architect is a registered building-design professional who can develop a project brief, coordinate design information and guide a building project through approvals and construction.

In the UK, the title architect is legally protected and may only be used by someone registered with the Architects Registration Board. Registration is distinct from membership of a professional institute.

For an Edinburgh renovation or extension, an architect may prepare surveys, design proposals, planning applications, building warrant information and detailed construction documents. The precise service depends on the appointment.

Architects commonly coordinate input from structural engineers, energy specialists, contractors and other consultants. Their role should be agreed clearly, including which approvals, drawings and construction-stage duties are included.
