Planning Drawings

Planning drawings are the plans, elevations and supporting drawings prepared to describe a proposal for assessment by the planning authority.

They normally communicate the development’s scale, appearance, location and relationship to the existing building and neighbouring context. The required set depends on the proposal. The City of Edinburgh Council's planning application guidance explains the plans and supporting information required for different types of application.

Planning drawings are intended to establish what may be permitted, not every technical detail needed for construction. Further building warrant, structural and production information is often required afterward. The Scottish Government's building warrant application guidance explains the more detailed technical information required at the building standards stage.

Once permission is granted, the approved drawings and any conditions remain important. Later design development should be checked so it does not drift from what the authority approved. Approved plans, decision notices and associated documents can be viewed through the City of Edinburgh Council Planning and Building Standards Portal.
