Existing and Proposed Drawings

Existing and proposed drawings are paired architectural drawings showing a property before work and the intended design after the alterations are completed.

Existing drawings establish the current arrangement, while proposed drawings make additions, removals and changes clear. The comparison is commonly used for planning and building warrant submissions.

Plans, elevations and sections should correspond so that walls, openings, levels and roof changes can be understood consistently. Clear drawing conventions help reviewers and contractors identify the actual scope.

For renovation work, accurate existing information is particularly important. Errors in the starting survey can carry through into design, engineering, pricing and construction.
