Measured Survey

A measured survey is the systematic recording of an existing building’s dimensions, levels, openings and significant features so accurate drawings can be prepared.

The survey may use hand measurements, laser equipment, photography or digital scanning depending on the building and required accuracy. The resulting information commonly supports existing plans, elevations and sections.

Older Edinburgh properties are rarely perfectly square, level or consistent. A useful survey records these irregularities rather than forcing the building into an assumed geometry.

A measured survey records the visible building but is not necessarily a structural or condition survey. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) explains the different scope and purpose of building condition surveys. Concealed construction and defects may require separate investigation or opening-up work.
