Knock-Through

A knock-through is the removal of all or part of an internal wall to connect two existing rooms, often to create a larger kitchen, kitchen-diner or open-plan living space.

A knock-through is a common renovation project in which two existing rooms are connected by removing all or part of the wall between them.

In Edinburgh homes, knock-throughs are often used to create larger kitchens, kitchen-diners and more open-plan living spaces while adapting an existing property to suit modern layouts. They are particularly relevant to renovations of traditional flats and houses where rooms were originally designed as separate spaces.

The complexity of a knock-through depends largely on the wall being altered. Removing a non-load-bearing partition can be relatively straightforward, while altering a load-bearing wall becomes structural work and may require an engineered beam or other structural support.

The finished project can also involve associated joinery, flooring, plastering, electrical and plumbing work so that the former rooms read as one coherent space rather than simply two rooms with a wall removed.
